An alternative method for strong-ridged
parts is metal sand castings. In sand casting, the first
requirement is the design and the making of a pattern. This is a
duplicate of a part that is to be cast but modified in accordance
with the basic requirements of the casting process and the
particular molding technique that is to be employed.
The pattern
material is determined primarily by the number of casting to be
made. For small quantities, wood is most often used. For large
quantities aluminum, magnesium, or certain hard plastics are
employed. Typical applications are machinery, farm equipment,
automotive and marine.
